Certificate of Residency: What it is, what it's for, and how to apply.
The Certificate of Residence is an official document issued by the Municipality certifying an individual's residency. The certificate lists the individual's personal details and address.
Validity and requirements for the application
The Certificate of Residence is legally valid for 6 months and can be requested in any Italian municipality , regardless of the place of residence.
To submit the request you will need:
- name and surname of the interested party
- date and place of birth
- Municipality of residence

Historical Certificate of Residence: What it is and when it is needed
In addition to the ordinary certificate, it is possible to request a Historical Certificate of Residence , useful for reconstructing an individual's residencies in a specific municipality. In fact, to trace all of an individual's residencies in various Italian municipalities, the historical certificate of residence cannot be requested in any municipality but must be requested in all municipalities where the individual has resided.
Be careful of dates not present in the archives
It may happen that the requested date is not available in the Registry Office archives. In this case, the certificate will only list the addresses of available residences .
The customer will always be informed promptly in case of any additional costs .
Who can request certificates?
Certificates can be requested by anyone with a legitimate interest .
Some Civil Registry Offices may require a proxy accompanied by a copy of the interested party's identity document.
