What Is the Multilingual Birth Extract?

The Multilingual Birth Extract, also known as an International Birth Certificate, is an official document issued by the Italian Municipality where the birth was registered. It provides a summary of the key information contained in the birth record and is drawn up according to the multilingual templates established by international conventions, including the Vienna Convention of 1976. Thanks to this standardised format, the document is recognised and accepted in many countries without the need for a sworn translation or additional apostille legalisation.

What the Certificate Contains

The document includes the following personal details:

• Full name of the person concerned
• Date and Municipality of birth
• Full names of the parents
• Any annotations (e.g. a registered marriage)
• Translations in the multilingual formats established by the convention

Validity and Requirements

The Multilingual Birth Extract is legally valid for 6 months from the date of issue. To submit a request, the following information is required:

• Full name of the person concerned
• Date of birth
• Italian Municipality where the birth was registered (usually the Municipality of the parents' residence at the time of birth)

Who Can Request It?

The certificate can be requested by anyone with a legitimate interest, including authorised representatives with a formal written proxy and a copy of the subject's identity document. The document is commonly required for bureaucratic procedures, citizenship recognition, civil status-related applications, overseas enrolments, and more.

Additional Costs and Historical Research

For requests concerning individuals born more than 100 years ago, the Municipality may charge additional research fees for accessing historical archives. It is important to be aware that such searches may not yield a positive result: in that case, any amount paid to the Municipality will not be refundable. The client will always be informed promptly before any additional costs are incurred.

Transparency and Refund Policy

If the document cannot be located in the municipal archives, we apply a clear and transparent refund policy:

• We retain only the fixed research costs (approximately €39.00) and any amounts already paid to the Municipality
• We fully refund any unused costs, including courier shipping, apostille, and ancillary services
